COMPANY HISTORY The hub of this industry which is barely 20 years old, is the sleepy town of Camalig in Albay province, Philippines. Rustic, idyllic, handmaiden to the awesome grandeur of the Mayon Volcano, there is little from the outside to indicate that the frenetic activities in nipa huts and small homes producing abaca products and wallcoverings are destined for the posh department stores and villas of Paris and New York. Many hands, old and young, are at work weaving the multi-colored and exquisite designs that are an art form in itself, created by ingenious rural folk who hardly know a geometric pattern from an abstract.
After many years of frustration in trying to create patterns that would hold up in consistent designs, success at last was achieved after hardworking and talented weavers combined resourcefulness and available technology for the manufacture of abaca wallcoverings. A little engineering was applied in the construction of the looms and a little chemistry in mixing the colors, and a lot of imagination in the design work were combined to produce the impressive design and colors found in the abaca wallcoverings. An American textile designer, a Japanese interior decorator, a designer weaver from Baguio, and top management have tirelessly worked together with the weavers from Camalig, Albay and they have come up with beautiful creative designs that can compete with wallcovering designs all over the world.
